Main Slate Rundown 🏈
We roll into week three, which is about the time when the CFB schedule begins to heat up. We still don’t have a ton of marquee intraconference matchups on the Saturday docket just yet, but there is a trio of top 25 matchups on tap -- two of which (UGA at TENN, USF at MIA) will be on this week’s main slate.
As usual, the focus of this CFB newsletter will be on the 12-game DraftKings main slate, which kicks off at noon on Saturday. The 14-game FanDuel slate will share eight games in common with the DK slate, so a good chunk of the info mentioned in this newsletter should be applicable for the FanDuel CFB players. Let’s dive in! Best of luck!
To begin, let’s get a look at the 14 teams with a 24+ implied point total on this slate. The majority of our preferred DFS plays will be found on these rosters:

On the flip side, we’ll want limited-to-no exposure to teams who are expected to struggle to score 20+ points. These teams generally either find themselves completely out-matched versus their upcoming opponent, they don’t possess a capable offense, their matchup is expected to be a slow and low-scoring affair, or it’s some combination of those three factors. Unless a specific player is priced down, has near-matchup-proof talent, and is guaranteed high volume, we should lean toward avoiding these nine teams on the slate:

Obligatory: Vegas spreads and totals aren’t the be-all, end-all but they do give us a solid amount of information to use as our research ‘jump-off point’ on any given slate.
Main Slate Match-Ups

Week Three Core Targets 🎯
QB John Mateer, OU | $9,200 | at TEMP
Following a dynamic sophomore season at Washington State last year, where he passed for 3,139 yards and ran for 826 yards with 44 total TDs, John Mateer is quickly establishing himself as one of the top QBs in the nation and a Heisman frontrunner. Through two games with Oklahoma, Mateer has passed for 662 yards (331.0 YPG) and four TDs with a 71.8% comp%. He has also run it 26 times for 98 yards and three scores on the ground. Dual-threat QBs reign supreme at the CFB level, and Mateer is among the best. He is one of the few guys who could realistically pass for 300+ yards and rush for 100+ yards.
Oklahoma takes on Temple on the road this Saturday. Temple has been stingy defensively, but they’ve faced UMass and Howard over the first two weeks of the season, winning by a combined score of 97-to-17. So, to state the obvious, the level of competition they have faced up to this point is nowhere close to what they’ll be up against this week. Oklahoma (-23.5) steps in as near-four-touchdown road favorites and owns a strong 37.5 implied team total. If Temple can keep this thing semi-competitive, Mateer and the rest of the Sooner starters should be out there for the entire four quarters, which gives Mateer plenty of time to rack up the stats.
RB Desmond Reid, PITT | $8,500 | at WVU
If you played CFB DFS last season, Desmond Reid is a name you’re very familiar with. He was one of the most versatile RBs in college football, racking up 1,545 scrimmage yards (140.5 YPG), which included 52 receptions and nine total touchdowns. Reid has not had to shoulder much of a workload up to this point this season, with just 24 total touches (18 rushes, 6 receptions). But blowouts have been the primary reason for that. Pitt has won their first two games by a combined score of 106-to-26. Things should be much more competitive this week with Pitt being a 7.5-point road favorite in a game that has a strong 55.5 over/under (PITT: 31.5 implied total). Reid is easily the best athlete in this backfield, so expect much more volume to head in his direction this Saturday.

RB Justice Haynes, MICH | $7,400 | vs. CMU
It feels like a good week to roll out multiple stud RBs, so Justice Haynes sets up as another high-end core play for me this Saturday. Haynes never received a featured role during his freshman and sophomore seasons at Alabama, but Michigan appears to be giving him that opportunity. He has already racked up 40 combined touches (35 rush, 5 rec) and has averaged 142.0 YPG and 8.1 YPC on the ground through two weeks. Backup RB Jodan Marshall has mustered just 2.9 YPC on his 20 carries, so Haynes doesn’t seem to be in any danger of losing his lead role any time soon. After a tough loss to Oklahoma last week, Michigan should look to take some frustrations out on an inferior Central Michigan team, which the Wolverines are 27.5-point favorites over. I’d be surprised if Haynes gets much run in the fourth quarter, assuming Michigan has the game well in hand by then, but he should have a busy and productive game before his day is done.
WR/TE Jaren Kanak, OU | $4,400 | at TEMP
We’ve gone for some pricey guys in the core up to this point, so we’ll save some salary with the receivers. TE Jaren Kanak (listed as a WR for DFS purposes) is a cheap option who also works out as a stack piece with QB John Mateer. Kanak didn’t find the endzone in either of OU’s first two games, but he has been targeted six times in both weeks, bringing in 10 of those 12 targets for 156 yards (78.0 YPG). He is a reliable receiving option in a productive offense that should put up plenty of points and long drives together this Saturday.
WR Parker Livingstone, TEX | $3,500 | vs. UTEP
Livingstone is a redshirt freshman who has stepped up in a big way for a thin Longhorns receiving corps. Over Texas’ first two games, he has brought in three of Arch Manning’s five passing TDs while racking up 175 receiving yards (87.5 YPG) and a monster 29.2 yards per catch average. With other Texas WRs DeAndre Moore Jr. (concussion) and Emmett Mosley V both listed as “doubtful” for this game, Livingstone should once again operate as a featured receiver. Texas is a massive 40.5-point favorite over UTEP this week, with a slate-leading 46.0 implied point total. It’s going to be a blowout, but much like the Longhorns’ game plan against San Jose State in week two, Arch Manning should be ready to let it rip against an inferior opponent this week, and Livingstone is a strong bet to pay off this modest $3,500 price tag.
Texas might have a star receiver in Parker Livingstone.
175 receiving yards, 3TDs, & 29.2 YPC (!!!) on his 6 receptions this season.
Very quick WR. Longhorns all this production in first season as a a starter after redshirting last season.
