Main Slate Rundown 🏈

We are smack dab in the CFB mid-season with week eight upon us! As usual, we’ll be placing our focus on the 12-game DraftKings Saturday main slate which will kick off at noon ET. The 14-game FanDuel main slate, which always includes a few games in the 7 o’clock ET window, will feature ten mutually shared games with the DK slate. That is more than usual, so feel free to keep some of the recommended plays and insights from this newsletter in mind if FanDuel is your CFB DFS site of choice! We’ve got several highly anticipated match-ups on the board this Saturday so let’s get into it! Best of luck!

To begin, let’s get a look at the 14 teams with a 24.8+ implied point total on this slate. The majority of our preferred DFS plays will be found on these rosters:

On the flip side, we’ll want limited-to-no exposure to teams who are expected to struggle to score 20+ points. Unless a specific player is priced down, has near-match-up-proof talent, and is guaranteed high volume, we should lean toward avoiding these five teams on the slate:

Obligatory: Vegas spreads and totals aren’t the be-all, end-all but they do give us a solid amount of information to use as our research ‘jump-off point’ on any given slate.

Main Slate Match-Ups

Week Eight Core Targets 🎯

QB Sawyer Robertson, BAY | $6,800 | at TTU

Robertson has been a great DFS asset since he took over the Baylor starting QB gig. Spanning the last three games, Robertson has scored no fewer than 23.72 DKFP and he has combined for 10 TDs (8 passing/2 rushing). He may not be an overly polished passer (59.2% comp%) but he does bring dual-threat upside to the table. Robertson also sets up as an excellent DvP play considering Texas Tech has allowed a slate-high 27.8 FPPG to QBs this season. At a sub-$7k price tag, Robertson checks off all of the boxes that we look for in a DFS QB. You could run him “naked” but his stack pieces are all very affordable as well.

RB Tahj Brooks, TTU | $8,400 | vs. BAY

On the other side of this BAY/TTU game, we’ll be targeting workhorse RB Tahj Brooks. Brooks is coming off of two mammoth games against Arizona and Cincinnati where he combined for 300 yards rushing on 53 carries (5.7 YPC) and five TDs. The Red Raiders do not shy away from giving Brooks all of the work he can handle, especially in close games, as this one should be (TTU -6). He doesn’t offer much in the way of receiving out of the backfield, but he could easily put up 150+ yards on the ground with multiple TDs this Saturday. With a lack of high-end RBs on this slate, Brooks is a pretty clear-cut stud play to target.

RB Josh McCray, IL | $3,800 | vs. MICH

RB Kaden Feagin (undisclosed) is out for a second consecutive game which should lead to RB1 work for Josh McCray once again. McCray put up a loaded box score as the lead back last week, taking 16 carries for 78 yards (4.9 YPC) and two TDs while tacking on three receptions for 46 yards (15.3 YPR) and an additional TD -- good for 33.4 DKFP. There were also 99 points scored in that game between Illinois and Purdue, so we clearly can’t count on such a gaudy output for McCray this week. That said, he’s only $3,800 and this match-up against the Michigan defense isn’t as worrisome as it used to be. Illinois is only a four-point underdog at home so McCray should be actively involved from start to finish in this game.

WR Luther Burden III, MIZZ | $8,100 | vs. AUB

There is no shortage of WR/TE value on this slate but we also have some quality stud receivers to choose from up top as well. Burden is going to be my stud WR pick as it’s only a matter of time before he rips off a slate-breaking performance, as he did on multiple occasions last season, and I don’t believe he’ll be overly popular. After opening the season with a couple of blowout wins, there was no need to feed Burden a ton of targets. However, he’s been better from a DFS standpoint in recent weeks, averaging 6.0 receptions/gm, 83.5 rec YPG, 22.8 FPPG, and he scored four total TDs over his last four games.

WR Germie Bernard, BAMA | $4,100 | at TENN

Here we just have a straight-up misprice on the No. 2 Alabama WR who owns a solid 21.3% Target%. For comparison, Bernard is $7,900 on the FanDuel slate, which makes him the 13th most expensive WR on the board. Bernard, who also occasionally mixes into the Bama run game as well, is coming off of his best game of the season with four catches for 89 yards and a TD against the Gamecocks last week. Bama has only thrown the ball on 40.5% of offensive plays, but they may need QB Jalen Milroe to air it out more as they head into Knoxville as slight three-point favorites. Regardless, Bernard probably returns value on this $4,100 DK salary even if Alabama doesn’t throw it a ton.
