Main Slate Rundown 🏈
One month of the 2024 college football season is in the books and week five will provide us with another action-packed CFB Saturday! As usual, our focus in this newsletter is going to be on the 13-game DraftKings main slate which will kick off at noon ET. The 14-game FanDuel main slate, which always bleeds into the evening window, will feature nine mutually shared games with the DK slate. So feel free to keep some of the recommended plays and insights from this newsletter in mind if FanDuel is your CFB DFS site of choice! Best of luck!
To begin, let’s get a look at the 14 teams with a 24.0+ implied point total on this slate. The majority of our preferred DFS plays will be found on these rosters:
On the flip side, we’ll want limited-to-no exposure to teams who are expected to struggle to score 20+ points. Unless a specific player is priced down, has near-match-up-proof talent, and is guaranteed high volume, we should lean toward avoiding these six teams on the slate:
Obligatory: Vegas spreads and totals aren’t the be-all, end-all but they do give us a solid amount of information to use as our research ‘jump-off point’ on any given slate.
Main Slate Match-Ups
Week Five Core Targets 🎯
QB Miller Moss, USC | $7,300 | vs. WISC
I want to get at least two high-end RBs and at least one premiere WR in my lineups this week, so I’ll be looking to save some salary at the QB position more often than not. Miller Moss fits the bill at a reasonable $7,300 price tag. Despite averaging 39.0 pass attempts/gm, Moss hasn’t put up huge DFS results yet this season. But that is largely due to a lack of touchdowns, with just five passing TDs through USC’s first three games. He is still averaging a hair under 300 YPG and USC is passing the ball on a slate-high 61.6% of their plays. We saw what sort of ceiling Moss truly possesses in last year’s Holiday Bowl versus Louisville. Moss got the bowl game start with the soon-to-be-No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams sitting out, and he went on to throw for 372 yards and six TDs. Unfortunately, Moss does not provide much in the way of mobility as he is a true pocket passer. He can also be a tough player to stack with as there aren’t many standout USC pass catchers to choose from. But, for the price, I like this spot for Moss at home against Wisconsin and USC ranks fourth on the slate with a 33.5 implied team total.
RB RJ Harvey, UCF | $8,900 | vs. COL
Harvey has been among the most productive offensive players in the country, racking up 485 total yards in three games (161.7 YPG) and he has already punched in nine touchdowns (8 rushing/1 receiving). This UCF vs. COL game owns a slate-high 62.5 O/U and the Knights are strong 14-point home favorites against Deion Sanders’ squad. The script should favor another Harvey-heavy game and, at this point, he feels like a lock for 120+ yards and at least two TDs in any remotely favorable match-up. He’s going to be one of the highest-owned players on this slate but he’s venturing toward unfadable territory. If you’re someone who makes just one lineup, Harvey should probably be in it.
RB Dante Dowdell, NEB | $5,600 | at PUR
I will be prioritizing multiple high-end, pricier RBs in my lineups but one more affordable RB that makes plenty of sense is Dante Dowdell at $5,600. True freshman QB Dylan Raiola (72.2% comp%, 8:2 TD:INT ratio) has been very efficient for the Cornhuskers, but this will be his first collegiate start on the road, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Nebraska ends up leaning on Dowdell and the run game. This is also about as strong of a DvP spot as you will find on this slate. Purdue has been trounced by opposing run games, ranking 132nd out of 134 FBS teams allowing 269.0 rush YPG. They’re also allowing 1.7 TDs/gm and 31.7 FPPG to RBs. In a close game against Illinois last week, Dowdell handled 22 touches. He wasn’t overly efficient, totaling 82 yards and zero TDs. But, Illinois also ranks as the 35th run defense in the FBS (104.3 rush YPG allowed). In this MUCH better match-up, if Dowdell comes close to, or exceeds, 20 touches again, 100+ yards and at least one TD feels like a fairly safe projection. He also has a 3% pOwn% so Dowdell may not command much ownership on this slate.
WR Tai Felton, UMD | $7,700 | at IU
There are some big-time stud WRs on this slate and I had a tough time deciding on which guy to use as my core spend-up. Ultimately, Tai Felton gets the nod. The usage and production are simply off the charts -- through four games, Felton has drawn 54 targets for a massive 36.5% Target% and he has hauled in 41 catches for 604 yards (151.0 YPG) and 5 TDs. Maryland is a seven-point road underdog, so the script should lean pass-heavy. Indiana has only allowed 79.5 YPG to WRs this season but they have not exactly faced a gauntlet of tough opponents up to this point (FIU, Western Illinois, UCLA, and Charlotte). Felton should be due for another big day.

WR Will Pauling, WISC | $4,800 | at USC
Landing on the correct stack pieces to my core QB, Miller Moss, may be a bit tricky, but Will Pauling makes for a sensible bring-back play in a potential game stack. Wisconsin is down to their backup QB after Tyler Van Dyke tore his ACL in the game against Alabama two weeks ago, but backup QB Braedyn Locke replaced Van Dyke and proceeded to pepper Pauling with targets. Pauling accounts for an excellent 30.9% Target% and, considering the Badgers are +15.5 point underdogs, they’re likely going to need to pass the ball much more than they’re used to if they hope to stay competitive in this game. $4,800 is a very generous price for Pauling in this spot.
