Main Slate Rundown 🏈

Week one is in the books and we now move on to perhaps an even more exciting college football Saturday! Many of the top teams got one of their default cupcakes out of the way and will now take on more formidable competition. That isn’t to say there won’t be blowouts on this week’s DFS slate -- there most definitely will. But more intriguing games like Texas (-7) at Michigan and Arkansas at Oklahoma State (-7.5), among others, will be on the main slate docket this Saturday with additional fun match-ups lined up for the evening games.

As usual, our focus in this newsletter is going to be on the 12-game DraftKings main slate which will kick off at noon ET. The 14-game FanDuel main slate, which always bleeds into the evening window, will feature eight mutually shared games with the DK slate, so feel free to keep some recommended plays and insights from this newsletter in mind if that is your CFB DFS site of choice! Best of luck!

To begin, let’s get a look at the 14 teams with a 24.5+ implied point total on this slate. The majority of our preferred DFS plays will be found on these rosters:

On the flip side, we’ll want very little exposure to teams who are expected to struggle to score 20+ points. Unless a specific player is priced down and is guaranteed high volume, we should lean toward avoiding these eight teams on the slate:

Obligatory: Vegas spreads and totals aren’t the be-all, end-all but they do give us a solid amount of information to use as our research ‘jump-off point’ on any given slate.

Main Slate Match-Ups

Week 2 Core Targets 🎯

QB Taylen Green, ARK | $7,500 | at OKST

Yes, it was easy sledding against a vastly inferior Arkansas-Pine Bluff team, but Taylen Green looked electric in his Arkansas debut. The Boise State transfer completed 16/23 passes (69.6% comp%) for 229 yards and two TDs while tacking on 88 yards on six rushes (14.7 YPC) for two additional TDs. Oklahoma State will be a step up in competition but this Cowboys defense did not look impressive against South Dakota State as they allowed 264 yards and two TDs to QB Mark Gronkowski and were also getting gashed by the run game before the SDSU offense had to switch to a pass-happy script while playing from behind. Taylen Green is the sort of mobile QB we love slotting into DFS lineups and this game, which features a high 61.5 over/under and fairly close spread (OKST -7.5) stands out as one of the best game environments on the slate.

RB DJ Giddens, KSU | $6,600 | at TUL

Once again, Ollie Gordon II ($9,600) needs little introduction as the slate’s top RB following a week where he took 31 touches (27 carries, 4 receptions) for 146 total yards and three scores.

We’ll drop down $3,000 in price and place the spotlight on Kansas State lead back DJ Giddens. The Wildcats cruised to a comfortable 41-6 win over inferior Tennessee-Martin last week and they didn’t really need to open up the playbook very much en route to the blowout. While he was held out of the endzone, Giddens had no issues gaining yardage, converting his 13 carries to 124 yards (9.5 YPC), which included a 48-yard burst. Even if you want to take that huge run away, Giddens still averaged 6.3 YPC and he also brought in 3-of-4 targets. Kansas State heads to Tulane as 9.5-point road favorites which is the sort of spread we like to see when targeting RBs. Vegas is indicating that this game should go in KSU’s favor, but not by a wide enough margin that would limit the workload of the starters. Giddens was a workhorse back last season, ranking 19th in the country in rush attempts (223) and yards (1,226). He’d routinely handle 20-to-30 plus touches in more competitive games, as this one projects to be.

RB Desmond Reid, PITT | $5,900 | at CINCY

With Rodney Hammond Jr. Being deemed ineligible for the 2024 season ahead of last week’s game, that opened the door for Western Carolina transfer Desmond Reid to take the reigns, and he did not disappoint in his Pitt debut. Reid took 14 carries for 145 yards (10.4 YPC), with a long of 46 yards, and a touchdown while catching 3-of-3 targets. Reid also returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown. The day ended in a 55-24 blowout Panthers win but Reid has clearly set himself apart atop the depth chart. The Cincy Bearcats played an inferior opponent in week one, the Towson Tigers, and won by a score of 38-20. The fact that Cincy gave up 194 yards rushing to Towson, for a 5.2 YPC average, can only bode well for Reid and this Panthers running game.

WR (TE) Oronde Gadsden II, SYR | $5,000 | vs. GT

Gadsden worked a treat as a core play last week, hauling in 7-of-10 targets for 108 yards and a score against Ohio. Gadsden’s ten targets represented a healthy 25.0% target% and, though he did see a significant $1,500 price bump, $5,000 is still too cheap for this immensely talented tight end/wide receiver hybrid. The 6’5”, 225 lb. Gadsden is simply a mismatch against slow linebackers and smaller corners and he’s going to continue to operate as Syracuse’s No. 1 or No. 2 receiving option on most dropbacks. Ownership is probably going to be through the roof on him again but I’m just not willing to let that sway me away. This game between Georgia Tech (-3) and ‘Cuse is another great game environment to target with its close spread and 61 over/under.

WR Cam Coleman, AUB | $4,500 | vs. CAL

If any of these core plays have a chance of backfiring, it’s probably this one, but I’m willing to roll the dice. Coleman is a highly touted true freshman who enters in as the No. 2 WR and No. 5 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle. Coleman was only targeted twice in the season opener against Alabama A&M, but he made those targets count, catching both for 62 yards and a TD. Auburn won the game 73-3 so, as you can guess, there was no need for the starters to play much in the second half as plenty of bench players went on to see the field. Things will get much more competitive with Cal in town, but Auburn remains a solid 13-point favorite while owning a strong 32.8 implied team total. I’m calling for Coleman to go for 100+ yards and at least one tuddy as the star freshman looks to build additional in-game rapport with QB Payton Thorne now that SEC play begins in a couple of weeks for the Tigers.
