Main Slate Rundown 🏈
The final week of the college football regular season has arrived and while that fact provokes some bittersweet feelings, it also means one other thing – it’s Rivalry Week, baby! Beyond this Saturday, we’ll still have some pivotal conference championships to look forward to before we launch into the bowl/playoff season! As usual, we’ll be placing our focus on the 12-game DraftKings main slate which will kick off at noon ET. The 14-game FanDuel main slate, which always includes a few games in the 7 o’clock ET window, will feature eight mutually shared games with the DK slate. Feel free to keep some of the recommended plays from this newsletter in mind if FanDuel is your CFB DFS site of choice (and the pricing makes sense)! Best of luck!
To begin, let’s get a look at the 16 teams with a 25.5+ implied point total on this slate. The majority of our preferred DFS plays will be found on these rosters:
On the flip side, we’ll want limited-to-no exposure to teams who are expected to struggle to score 20+ points. Unless a specific player is priced down, has near-match-up-proof talent, and is guaranteed high volume, we should lean toward avoiding these five teams on the slate:
Obligatory: Vegas spreads and totals aren’t the be-all, end-all but they do give us a solid amount of information to use as our research ‘jump-off point’ on any given slate.
Main Slate Match-Ups
Rivalry Week Core Plays 🎯
QB Brady Cook, MIZZ | $4,900 | vs. ARK
With so many stud RBs on this slate, I believe it makes the most sense to load up on that position and look for savings elsewhere. It’s tough to look past this sub-$5k price tag on Brady Cook, who looked healthy last week and seems to be past the hand injury that kept him out of a couple of games. Cook hasn’t had many big games this season but we know he’s a quality SEC QB and he’ll draw a plus match-up at home versus an Arkansas defense that has allowed 28.0 FPPG to QBs L4Games. Cook has a strong chance to return 4x value (or better) in this spot and, while you could run him “naked” in lineups, he does have two easily identifiable stack targets in Luther Burden III ($7,100) and Theo Wease Jr. ($5,500).
RB Cam Skattebo, ASU | $10,100 | at ARIZ
Skattebo won’t come cheap but he is an absolute bellcow RB who has handled 26.1 Touches/gm and has produced 168.2 scrimmage YPG this season. He’s active as a pass catcher and should push for 25+ carries this Saturday as well. Arizona State is making a run for the playoffs so they’ll look to get a big road win over rival Arizona. ASU is 15th in the FBS in RushPlay% and the fact that they’re nine-point road favorites bodes well for a Skattebo-heavy game script.
RB Tahj Brooks, TTU | $9,900 | vs. WVU
As mentioned, there are multiple stud RBs to choose from on this slate and my priority will be getting three, maybe four of these guys into lineups. You really can’t beat the floor that Tahj Brooks brings to the table and his “worst” game dating back to week five was a 121-yard, one-touchdown performance on 30 carries versus TCU in week nine. That still netted him 22.2 DKFP. He nuked the slate last week against OKST where he handled 37 total touches (28 rush/9 rec) for 198 scrimmage yards and four total TDs (3 rush/1 rec). This game between Texas Tech and West Virginia should be a track meet given its 64.0 over/under and tight spread (TTU -3). There is enough value at QB and WR/TE on this slate to make rostering Brooks, Skattebo, and one or two other high-end RBs completely viable.
WR/TE Oronde Gadsden II, SYR | $5,200 | vs. MIA
Syracuse has been the 3rd most pass-happy offense in the FBS (62.2% PassPlay%) and they’re sizable 10.5-point home underdogs versus the Miami Hurricanes this week in a game that features a slate-high 67.0 over/under, so there should once again be plenty of targets available for the dynamic receiver/tight end Oronde Gadsden II. Syracuse is led by a very talented passer in QB Kyle McCord, who is averaging 358.7 pass YPG and leads the country in total passing yards (3,946 yards) -- just ahead of his counterpart in this game, Cam Ward (3,774 yards). Syracuse may also be down a couple of WRs with Trebor Pena and Umari Hatcher both listed as “questionable” with undisclosed injuries, but even if one or both of those guys are available, Gadsden profiles as a strong play. Gadsden is on the heels of three consecutive 100+ yard games where he has scored two TDs and averaged 9.0 receptions/gm in that span. Miami has not been sharp versus TEs this season and Gadsden’s size and versatility make him a match-up nightmare for most defenses. I love him at this affordable $5,200 price tag.
WR Ashtyn Hawkins, BAY | $3,600 | vs. KU
Another core value play is needed in order to make the Skattebo/Brooks pairing a possibility, so we’ll put a $3,600 Ashtyn Hawkins on the radar. This Baylor vs. Kansas game is pinned with a high 62.0 total and features the slimmest spread on the slate (BAY +1.5), so a competitive, high-scoring atmosphere should be expected. Hawkins has led the Baylor offense in targets and receptions in back-to-back games and he shouldn’t have major trouble paying off his bottom-of-the-barrel DFS salary against a Kansas defense that has allowed 44.8 FPPG to WRs L4Games.
